What is known about the update
Google's official Search status dashboard lists a September 2026 spam update that began on September 24, 2026. The rollout duration shown in the summary is 13 days and 16 hours. This is a spam update by Google's definition, and it should not be presented as a core update.
A rollout notice describes a change in the search system; it is not a diagnosis of a specific site. A drop that happened that same week may also be related to indexing, competitors, a change to a page, or demand.
Build a comparison you can interpret
Our recommendation is to start in Search Console and pick similar time windows before and after the rollout, taking into account days of the week and holidays. Examine pages and queries separately. A drop in clicks alongside stable impressions needs a different check from a broad drop in impressions.
Separate brand searches from general searches, mobile from desktop, and relevant countries from non-business activity. Comparing the average position of the whole site can hide a change in the mix of queries.
Check technical and content causes
Before a broad edit, check that the important pages return a valid response, are open to crawling and do not point to a wrong canonical. Compare the date of site changes with the date of the drop. If a template was replaced or a migration was done, that is a separate line of inquiry.
In a content review, focus on the question the page solves, its originality and the credibility of its promises. Mass deletion of articles just because traffic dropped is not a work plan. Set a reasoned action for each page: improve it, merge it with a suitable redirect, or leave it for monitoring.
What to record in the report
Keep a list of affected pages, the metrics that changed, the hypothesis being tested and the action taken. Assessing recovery should rest on a trend and on relevant demand, and not on a screenshot of a single phrase.
