The right trigger starts with a successful submission

Many forms send information without reloading the page. In such cases a button click or a regular submit event is not necessarily confirmation that the form was received. The GTM documentation presents a Custom Event as a way to handle interactions that the standard method does not cover properly.

We recommend tying the measurement to a reliable form success signal. If the plugin or the code provides a callback after receipt, that is a suitable place to consider firing an event.

Set a contract between the site and the tracking

The site developer and the measurement person need to agree on an event name and when it fires. As a hypothetical example, form_success would be pushed to the dataLayer only after a success response from the server. A parameter such as form type can help tell a business inquiry from a newsletter signup.

Keep parameter names consistent and do not include a name, phone number or email. If the same form is on several pages, there is no need to create a different event for each URL; you can document context with a suitable parameter that is not personal information.

Check in Preview and in the target system

In GTM Preview, make sure the event appears once and triggers only the intended tags. Then check that the event reached the analytics or advertising tool. Appearing in Preview alone does not confirm that the data was received at the destination.

Run the scenarios of a missing field, a server error, a double click and a successful submission. In failure scenarios, do not count an inquiry. If the form redirects to a thank-you page, make sure refreshing the page does not create another count of the same submission. Keep documentation and check again after a plugin update or a form replacement.
